The Ultimate Safari Guide to the Maasai Mara
Quick Facts
Introduction
Kenya's Maasai Mara National Reserve is world-renowned for its exceptional populations of lion, African leopard, cheetah, and African bush elephant. It also hosts the Great Migration, which is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
Pro Tip: Book Early!
If you plan to visit during the Great Migration (July–September), ensure you book your flights and camps at least 6 to 9 months in advance.
The Big Five
To see all of the Big Five in a single trip, you need a professional guide. Here is what to look for:
- Lion: Often found in large prides on the open plains.
- Leopard: Solitary and elusive, usually spotted in trees along the Mara River.
- Elephant: Large herds are common throughout the reserve.
- Buffalo: Found in dense brush and open savannah.
- Rhino: The rarest of the five; head to the Mara Triangle for the best chance.

How to Get There
- By Air: Fly from Wilson Airport (Nairobi) to one of the Mara's many airstrips (approx. 45 mins).
- By Road: A 5–6 hour drive from Nairobi via Narok.
Health & Safety
The Maasai Mara is a malaria zone. Please consult your doctor for prophylaxis and use insect repellent during dawn and dusk.
